Radial Design

Explain what the meaning and purpose is behind the work that you have created? How did you abstractly represent an idea....explain that idea and how you symbolize that using line, color and shape?

The idea I represented was that even random chaos can look like order if displayed in the right format.

Describe how you used particular formal properties (1 element, 1 principle, composition), media and visual symbolism to convey an idea visually?

I represented the idea by making something that would look totally chaotic by itself, but would look orderly as a radial design. I did this by drawing random shapes that can be connected inside of a 45° slice. I also used very basic geometric shapes, and bright colors.

What were some of my most powerful learning moments and what made them so?

I learned that sometimes you need to retry over and over again until something looks nice, like with gel pens, and sometimes there is no way to get something right on the first try.

What were some of the most challenging moments and what made them so?

The most challenging moment was when I almost wrecked my paper using the gel pens. If you press too hard you can start ripping into the paper, because the ink is wet. I had to notice ethics, and then wait for the paper to dry so I could try again. I was able to cover up most of this, but some areas you can tell are slightly more “bumpy”.

What did I learn were my greatest strengths? My biggest areas for improvement?

My greatest strength in this project was that most of it was repetitive, so I could get into a pattern. My biggest area for improvement is being more creative when designing the initial design.

What can you or should you do with what you have learned?

If I ever need to design something with gel pens, I now know how to use them. Such as, how hard to press down, what colors are brightest, how long it takes to dry, etc. Laso, I learned how to use math to make something look symmetrical.
